Workforce talent

Our businesses attract talent from top class local universities and colleges, and a range of training providers offer a rich supply of labour with the technical skills our businesses need.

Our residents are well qualified, with more than 120,000 local people holding a degree or equivalent qualification. The universities of Sussex, Brighton and Chichester have 40,000 students, including more than 8,000 on postgraduate programmes, drawn from more than 120 countries from around the world; Surrey University in Guildford has more than 13,500 full-time equivalent students on undergraduate and post graduate programmes; whilst our Further Education Colleges also offer a range of accredited undergraduate degree programmes.

Our universities, colleges, and a range of other training providers are very well connected to the local business community, and there are numerous opportunities to collaborate on skills development.

  • Over six thousand apprentices are working with West Sussex employers each year, including intermediate, advanced and higher apprentices;

  • Local businesses recruit high quality graduates and post-graduates from the local universities, often through internship programmes;

  • There are numerous knowledge transfer and innovation links to support the skills development of existing employees.

The Sussex Council of Training Providers represents and supports Government funded training organisations operating in the county.

For business leaders, the internationally renowned leadership and management institute at Roffey Park specialises in leadership, organisational development, human resources and coaching.
