    The richness of Coastal West Sussex’s advanced engineering activities is in its diversity. 

    • Ricardo designs, develops and researches internal combustion engines, gearboxes and transmission systems; vehicle acoustics; and motorcycles, mopeds and scooters.

    • Shoreham Airport is home to numerous aeronautical engineering businesses.

    • Bowers & Wilkins produce some of the world’s most advanced audio sound systems.

    • Electronic Temperature Instruments is a rapidly growing engineering company that produces digital thermometers, catering thermometers, moisture meters, pressure meters and other related products.

    • Rolls Royce is one of the world’s leading automobile engineering companies, producing exclusive, top of the range vehicles from its base in Chichester.
  • Marine

    Its coastal location makes Coastal West Sussex a great location for marine related activities, stretching from engineering businesses to port-related activities and those more closely associated with leisure and recreation.

    • Shoreham Port is one of the UK’s most successful and best equipped cargo ports, servicing 700-800 ship movements and transporting 1.8m tonnes of cargo each year. Parker Steel recently invested £10million in their steel processing plant to the Port, creating up to 200 jobs.

    • Chichester Marina is one of the best-equipped marinas on the south coast and has berths for well over 2000 seagoing yachts/motorboats, supporting a wide range of marine services businesses, including boatbuilders, brokers & agents, engineers and sailmakers.

    • Littlehampton Harbour handles over 33,000 tonnes of bulk cargo each year and has a thriving sailing community.  It is a premier port in the UK for sea fishing trips and has a busy inshore commercial fleet.

    • MG Duff is one of the largest suppliers of systems and services to the marine market in the UK and throughout the world, providing sacrificial anodes and impressed current cathodic protection systems.


  • Tourism

    Coastal West Sussex is one of the UK’s leading tourist destinations. It has high-end visitor attractions and it is also a popular family holiday destination with excellent sandy beaches and great facilities.  With the South Downs National Park on its doorstep, there are excellent opportunities for businesses involved in the visitor economy. 

    Each year, tourism brings more than £800m to the local economy, providing thousands of jobs and supporting numerous local businesses in the supply chain.   

    • Butlins Skyline Ltd in Bognor Regis attracts over 300,000 visitors every year and, as a signatory to the Coastal West Sussex Business & Developer Charter (LINK), actively seeking to recruit staff and procure services locally.

    • Goodwood is one of the UK’s great sporting venues, annually hosting the Festival of Speed and Glorious Goodwood, one of the most important fixtures in the UK horse-racing calendar.

    • There are major theatres in Chichester and Worthing and festivals covering a range of themes throughout the year.
  • Social care

    Around 55,000 residents in Coastal West Sussex are aged 75 years or more and this is projected to increase by another 10,000 over the next decade. This means that there is a growing market for services to support older people.

    • Sussex Health Care operates 20 care homes that are mainly in West Sussex. Its homes provide a full programme of activities and it aims to be the leading provider of residential and nursing care in the Sussex area.

    • BUPA has five West Sussex care homes offering residential, nursing, dementia, palliative, respite and convalescence care.

    • The West Sussex Forum is the largest representative body for community care in West Sussex. It works on behalf of small, medium and large providers and aims to create an environment in which care providers can continue to deliver and develop high quality care. 
  • Digital and creative Industries

    Coastal West Sussex attracts artists, performers and all kinds of creative talent. It is positioned between two of the south east of England’s great cultural centres – Chichester and Brighton. The ‘creative industries’ in West Sussex has an annual turnover of more than £200m and supports around 2,000 businesses and 26,000 jobs. 

    It is fast becoming a desirable location for digital businesses, who are able to recruit good quality local talent and benefit from close links to businesses in Brighton & Hove. 

    • Creatives Across Sussex is a free on-line resource that allows anyone within the Arts & Creative community in West Sussex to showcase work, share latest news, events and projects, and network with others.

    • Wired Sussex is a membership organisation, which supports digital, media and technology companies and freelancers to create, innovate and grow.

    • Fresh Egg is a leading global search engine marketing agency, providing multilingual website design and search engine optimisation services.
